found out about Ben, he d thought he d found the answer.
So much for that.
 How s Ben? Jacob asked.
He could still remember the terrible way Ben had slumped in
Alex s arms as he carried him out of the water. He knew for a fact
that wolves couldn t really get hurt, not unless they were stabbed or
shot by a silver blade or bullet, and that whatever the fall had done to
Ben should have healed, but his head and stomach were bleeding, and
he wouldn t wake up, even after Alex had gotten help and EMTs had
taken him out of the woods on a stretcher. They d explained that he
must have hurt himself in the fall, but it didn t look like he d smashed

his head on the rocks. The wound in his head was a sharp, rounded
point, like something had poked into it. Or stabbed, maybe, was more
like it.
Alex s eyes flitted away from Jacob s momentarily. The doctors
are optimistic, he said. He s still out of it, though. Jasper has a hell
of a theory of what happened. Have you ever heard of mates sharing
dreams with each other?
Jacob nodded. Yeah, all planeswalkers do that.
Dreaming was like planeswalking lite a trip to another world
without the dangerous business of tumbling through a planesgate.
While Jacob s body was safe and sleeping, he could visit any manner
of worlds his mind created. He had looked forward to sharing dreams
with Alex, to letting their shared inner lives create a private world of
their very own, but Alex didn t look excited at the idea of
dreamsharing. He looked scared.
What about nightmares? Have you ever heard of planeswalkers
getting hurt in their nightmares?
Jacob furrowed his brow. Nightmare, nightmare& Nightmare on
Elm Street, Wes Craven, Alexander Craven, sex, hot sex, sweaty
sex& Nope. Nothing. What s a nightmare?
You know, like a bad dream.
Why would you have bad dreams?
Alex s face reddened. Because people repress things!
Jacob raised an eyebrow. They do?
Yes! Alex snapped. Stupid shit happens all day long, and
people don t like to think about it, and they push it out of their heads
as best they can until they fall asleep and don t have other things to
focus on. Important things.
Yeah, but if something s upsetting you, shouldn t you
I didn t say me. Nothing s upsetting me, Alex snapped. His face
was red, and his eyes flashed the telltale yellow of his wolf s. If he
wasn t upset, he had a weird way of showing it. It reminded Jacob of
Jacob at the Break of Dawn 55
his father, of the way a certain word or phrase would seem to set him
off during the few times Jacob had seen him.
Jacob bit his lip as he realized he hadn t yet told Alex who his
father was. He should. Alex would want to know, but& Jacob sighed.
He didn t think his mate if that was what Alex was would like to
hear about it. Instead of telling him, he kept his mouth shut.
Maybe there was something to this repression thing after all.
I don t think planeswalkers have nightmares. Everyone does this
here? Jacob asked.
Alex blew out a long sigh. Yes. And when you wake up, you
comfort yourself that it s just a dream. Except now that Jasper and
Ben are mated, dreams aren t just dreams anymore.
Jacob nodded. That seemed right. It wasn t like dream sharing
was exactly like planeswalking from what he understood, mated
planeswalkers never physically left their beds when they fell asleep
together. But he d certainly heard of strange little paranormal
phenomena occurring when a particularly vivid dream was shared.
He d heard of some mated planeswalkers who had brought things
back from their dreams into their waking reality, and of some who d
made love in dreams and woken up with the love bites to prove it.
Those, however, were all pleasant enough tokens of shared
dreams. Jacob swallowed hard as he recalled Alex s explanation of
nightmares. It seemed like he had certainly had them before. If Jacob
mated with Alex, would he share those nightmares, too? It was hard
enough for Jacob to get control over his thoughts during the daytime.
So much of what ran through his head was worry and anxiety. He
couldn t imagine if all that fear was given free rein over his mind at
night. Especially if his mate got dragged into those fears with him.
Alex nodded. Jasper had a dream this guy stabbed Ben with a
silver hook, right in the same place where his head was punctured. It s
weird. None of us really know much about being half-planeswalker, [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
