Alexis nodded. “While Bruce is on the run, he won’t be here. It
shouldn’t be hard.”
Augustin came closer, touched Alexis’ shoulder. “But you’re
wrong, Alexis. Bruce will double his efforts to control Allen while
I’m hunting him. It’s true the transformation cannot take place
until Allen kills, but Allen is growing weak, and if he doesn’t feed
soon, he will die.”
Alexis’ gasped. “No.”
“I’m sorry, son, it works this way. A vampire, full fledged or
not, must feed.”
“Is there anything we can do in the meantime?” Vanessa said.
“What about if we give him blood from an animal, or a blood
bank?”
“It will only make the hunger worse.” Augustin shook his head.
“The only thing that satisfies is warm blood from a living being,
especially for a newborn. I’m sorry,” he said. “The suffering will
only increase over the next little while. I’ll do my best to finish
Bruce off quickly.”
He was gone.
Alexis sunk into a chair and put his head in his hands. He could
lose Allen either way. Dear God, would this nightmare ever end?
The screaming began soon after Augustin left and didn’t stop.
When Alexis went into the room, Allen was incoherent, his body

bathed in sweat. He was mumbling and then yelling again, yelling
for blood. He cursed everyone, including Alexis, and began to call
out Bruce’s name. “I love you, Bruce, save me, help me!”
Alexis closed his eyes, paced the room and watched as the sun
rose in the sky. “I can’t take another night of this,” he told Sousa.
“Where are they? Why hasn’t Augustin found him yet?”
“He will,” she said. “I know he will.”
Vanessa dared to get close enough to Allen that day to take his
pulse. She looked at Alexis. “It’s weak. He won’t last much
longer.”
Alexis let out a yell. “Jesus God, don’t let me lose another
one!”
Neither Sousa nor Vanessa could comfort him. “I’ve got to go
out for a walk, get some air.”
“It’s a good idea,” Vanessa said. “I’ll stay with Allen.”
Alexis came down the stairs and turned the corner. A man
came up to him. “Hey buddy,” he said, “spare a dime?”
Alexis narrowed his eyes but didn’t get a chance to reply. He
felt something heavy hit his head and he went down.

CHAPTER 5
Some song drifted in his head…something about the
eternal…life eternal…love eternal. He gasped and sat up. He
couldn’t see anything, and his head hurt. He touched it and it came
away wet and sticky. He moved closer to the wall, trying to draw
comfort from it. “Where in fuck am I?” he muttered, trying to
stand up. Everything spun around him. “Bruce?”
“Welcome, Alexis.”
“Where are you?”
“Here with you in the dark.”
Alexis searched his pockets for his brother’s cross.
“It’s gone,” he said. “You won’t be needing that.”
“What do you want?”
“Call off Augustin.”

“I can’t. He’s awake and he’s pissed, Bruce. Someone stole his
soul. And, on top of that, you didn’t keep your word.”
“I’m ready to make retribution.”
“He doesn’t want retribution. He wants revenge.”
“You’re going to call him off or I’ll kill your lover.”
“How?” Alexis demanded, but a shutter ran through him.
“You think that little witch can keep him down forever. He’s
mine. He always was, long before he’d even heard of you, cop. So,
if I tell him to tear open his veins and let the blood out, he will.
He’s not immortal yet, remember?”
“Please, don’t.”
“Well then, you need to call off Brisbois.”
“I don’t even know where in hell he is.”
“Your little witch can call him. You have two hours, then Allen
and I will fade from this world forever, Alexis. Exit is up ahead.”
Alexis moved quickly, his hand on the wall, the sounds of
creatures scratching at the walls as he went. He had to get to a
phone, any phone. His was gone. He felt air on his face and came
out of a tunnel. He began to run. The sun was going down and he
had no idea where he was. He saw lights far away and increased
his pace, his chest heaving, breathing hard.
The first store he came to, he asked to use the phone. An old
man pointed at a pay phone. “Please, I’m a cop, I have no money. I
got…mugged. Please, just one call.”
The man brought a phone up from under the counter but he
didn’t say anything. Alexis dialed Vanessa’s cell phone.
“Alexis, thank God,” she said when she heard his voice. “Are
you all right?”
He was so winded he could hardly talk. “Allen, tie him down,
make sure he can’t…”

Alexis heard a scream. “What is it? What’s happening?”
The line went dead.
Alexis dropped the phone and ran out of the store. He wasn’t
sure how to get to the house. He took the wrong direction three
times, then rounded a corner and ran directly into Augustin
Brisbois. “Alexis,” he said.
“He’s going to kill Allen…make Allen kill himself…why
haven’t you…Augustin…please…”
“I have him,” he said. “You led me right to him. I suspected
he’d try to grab you.”
“Is he…?”
He smiled. “Allen is all right. Go and see him.”
Alexis brushed past Augustin and ran up the stairs. “Allen!” he
called out. The place seemed empty. Then he heard a voice.
“Alexis?”
Alexis turned, smiling.
“My love,” Allen said softly, “Come to me.”
Alexis approached slowly. Something didn’t feel right. Then he
saw the blood on the floor. He walked around the sofa to see
Vanessa’s body. “No, oh no,” Alexis checked her pulse. She was
dead. “Allen, you didn’t. You didn’t.” [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
